Family Shelter
Host training and a detailed Handbook are provided. Two trained hosts are on site every evening. Host training is generally scheduled on the second Sunday of each month (November through March) at 4 p.m. at Sunnyside Centenary UMC, 3520 SE Yamhill. Please confirm training with the Volunteer Host Coordinator prior to attending training. Specially scheduled training sessions for church groups or other groups interested in volunteering may also be scheduled. Contact Laurie Abeling, Volunteer Host Coordinator at lmcstroul@hotmail.com .
The host arrives at 6:30 p.m. and checks in with the Volunteer Coordinator, who will provide information about the guests expected that evening. At 7:00 p.m. the host opens the shelter for the evening and welcomes guests. During the evening the host visits with guests, directs guests to dinner supplies, provides necessary linens, and makes sure guests read and sign the rules agreement. Hosts generally sleep in the nearby Dining Hall (bring your sleeping bag!) after Lights Out at 10:00 p.m
In the morning the host helps serve a light breakfast before locking up the Shelter for the day at 8:00 a.m.
Host duties also include recording information in the Shelter Log Book and noting any items needing to be purchased.
Shelter committee members are available by phone to answer questions that may arise.
